Recycling to Become Compulsory from 1 July (Johannesburg)

From Sunday 1 July 2018, it will be compulsory for Johannesburg residents to recycle in their households.  In an official announcement from the City of Johannesburg residents will be required to 'separate plastic, glass and biodegradable waste at source' before Pikitup collects waste.

eNCA reported that Pikitup will provide residents with colour-coded bags.

  • Blue bags must be used for plastic and glass
  • Green bags must be used

Officials have warned that if residents fail to change their ways, the city will run out of landfill sites in the next five years.
